Avondale, AZ — The number four became a huge part of Jimmie Johnson's life Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader won his fourth race at PIR, his fourth Chase for the Championship race this season and is now on the cusp of winning his unprecedented fourth consecutive series championship at the season finale next Sunday in South Florida. Sunday's win at the one-mile PIR oval was Johnson's series-high seventh victory of the season in the Purolator-equipped Lowe's Chevrolet Impala for Hendrick Motorsports. Johnson won in what he described as "butt kicking" at the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 event after leading 238 of the 312 laps. The victory all but wrapped up the record title for Johnson who now has a 108-point lead in the Chase over his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin. Johnson needs a 25th or better result at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the finale to claim the historic crown. The four-peat is also assured for the powerful Hendrick Motorsports team of Chevrolet entries on Purolator that now occupy the top-three spots with Jeff Gordon following Johnson and Martin in points.
